We Buffalonians are no stranger to winter storms, but it never hurts to have a little refresher. Freezing temps and scary snowfall expected over the next several days! We thought we would share a few tips to keep you and your home safe. Winter weather can be dangerous, so please take the necessary precautions.

Tips for home:
  • Raise the temperature in your home on Tuesday, 2 to 4 degrees above your normal setting. Keep the same temperature throughout day and night.
  • If you have a furnace; replace the filter.
  • Keep garage doors closed to avoid any unnecessary heat loss and limit opening exterior doors. (A.K.A. Hunker down with your family over the next few days!)
  • Make sure air vents and radiators are not blocked or obstructed.
  • To help minimize temperature loss you can boil water, make soup, or stews; they help introduce humidity and warmer temperatures into your home. DO NOT use your oven or grill to heat your home.  Stock up on groceries on your way home from work today.
  • Let your water drip in areas that have poor insulation. A $20.00 higher water bill is sure better than having serious damage!
Tips for family:
  • Please check on neighbors and elderly residents during these extreme temperatures. Stay warm and safe this week and share this with any of your family and friends.
  • Don't forget about your furry friends! They should not be outside for an extended period of time.
  • Do not travel unnecessarily. If you must go out, bundle up.
  • Check that your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies including nonperishable food, warm clothing, flashlight, etc.
  • Always make sure you have a full tank of gas.

Stay safe and warm out there, Buffalo! You've got this!
